How to play the country shapes quiz
Each question shows the outline of a country as a solid shape. Choose the country it belongs to from four options by tapping a choice or pressing 1 to 4. The right answer lights up green at once, and Enter takes you to the next shape. Every outline is enlarged to fill the frame, so a small country looks as big as a large one: judge the shape, not the size.
- Choose Practice or Daily challenge. The daily gives everyone the same 10 shapes today.
- Pick a region to practice one continent, and a round length.
- Look for clues: long coastlines, islands, lakes cut into the land, and straight borders drawn along lines of latitude.
Wrong options come from the same part of the world, so you have to know the actual shape. Some countries are famous for their outlines, like Italy's boot or Chile's long ribbon. Others, like many in Central Africa, take practice.
Which countries are left out?
A silhouette only works when the shape is clear. Very small countries and countries made of many tiny islands turn into a dot or a scatter of specks at this size, so they are not in this quiz. That includes Vatican City, Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Malta, Singapore, Bahrain, the Maldives, and most small island nations in the Caribbean, the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. Faraway overseas regions are also trimmed, so France appears as mainland France and Corsica, and the United States as the lower 48 states.
Questions
Why are the shapes different sizes from real life?
Every outline is scaled to fill the same square so you can see its details. Use the Bigger or Smaller quiz to practice real sizes.
Where do the outlines come from?
From Natural Earth, a free public domain world map, drawn with an equal-area projection centered on each country so the shapes are not stretched.
How many countries are in the quiz?
Over 160. The rest are left out because they are too small or too scattered to recognize as a shape.
