# Data and image licenses for the geography quizzes

The quiz pages (quiz-*.html) use the files in this folder and in images/flags/. They were prepared from the sources below:
simplified, trimmed to the countries in the quizzes, and with a few facts corrected or updated.

## Country data: data/quiz/countries.json

Derived from **mledoze/countries** (https://github.com/mledoze/countries), npm package `world-countries`.

The source database is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0:
https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1.0/

countries.json is a derived database and is made available under the same license, ODbL v1.0. Changes made:
only UN member and observer states are kept; selected fields only; some capitals, currencies, names and areas updated
(for example Bulgaria's currency is the euro since 2026, Zimbabwe Gold since 2024, Bolivia, South Africa, Eswatini and
Sri Lanka list more than one capital, and the areas of the United States and China follow the CIA World Factbook).

Derived from **Natural Earth** Admin 0 countries, 1:50m (https://www.naturalearthdata.com/), via the npm package
`world-atlas` (https://github.com/topojson/world-atlas). Natural Earth data is in the public domain.

From **lipis/flag-icons** (https://github.com/lipis/flag-icons), 4:3 versions, with whitespace removed.
