World capitals quiz

Name the capital city of a country, or turn it around and name the country for a capital. Choose a region, or take today's daily challenge. Free, no sign-up.

How to play the capitals quiz

The capitals quiz has two directions. In Country to capital you see a country and choose its capital city from four options. In Capital to country you see a city and choose the country it leads. Switch between them under Question type. Answer by tapping a choice or pressing 1 to 4, then press Enter or Next to keep going.

  1. Choose Practice or Daily challenge. The daily mixes both directions, and everyone gets the same 10 questions today.
  2. Pick a region and a round length. Ten questions makes a quick warm-up; All covers every country in the region.
  3. Learn from the feedback. Each answer shows the correct capital, plus a note when a country has more than one capital or its capital has moved.

Wrong options usually come from nearby countries, so you cannot simply guess by continent. Some countries are tricky on purpose: Australia's capital is Canberra, not Sydney; Canada's is Ottawa, not Toronto; and Türkiye's is Ankara, not Istanbul.

Countries with more than one capital

South Africa splits its government across three cities: Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein. Bolivia names Sucre as its constitutional capital while the government sits in La Paz. In the Netherlands, Amsterdam is the capital, but parliament and the government are in The Hague. The quiz always asks for the official capital and explains the rest after you answer.

Questions

Which countries are included?

All 193 United Nations member states plus Vatican City. Palestine is left out of this quiz because the status of its capital is disputed.

Why do some capitals seem wrong?

Capitals change. Myanmar moved its capital to Naypyidaw in 2006, Nigeria to Abuja in 1991, and Burundi to Gitega in 2019. The quiz uses current capitals.

What is the best way to memorize capitals?

Play one region at a time in both directions, and keep the round short. Go back to a region after a day or two; spaced practice helps facts stick.
