How to play Bigger or Smaller
Bigger or Smaller is a higher or lower game with countries. You see one country with its total area and a second country with its area hidden. Decide whether the second country is bigger or smaller, then tap the button or press 1 for bigger and 2 for smaller. If you are right, the hidden country becomes the new one to beat and your streak grows by one. One wrong answer ends the run.
- Choose Practice or Daily challenge. In the daily, everyone gets the same chain of countries today, so you can compare streaks with friends.
- Pick a region in Practice to compare only countries on one continent, or play All for the whole world.
- Keep going. The first few pairs are far apart in size; after that the gaps get smaller and harder to judge.
Areas are total area in square kilometers, including lakes and rivers inside the country, with square miles shown underneath. No pair is ever closer than 10% in size, since sources differ slightly on exact figures.
Tips
- Maps can fool you. Common world maps stretch land near the poles, so Greenland, Canada and Russia look bigger than they are, and Africa looks smaller.
- Learn a few anchors. France is about 550,000 km², Germany about 357,000 km², and India about 3.3 million km². Compare new countries to an anchor you know.
- Remember the giants: Russia, Canada, the United States, China, Brazil and Australia are the six largest countries.
Questions
Does area include water?
Yes. The quiz uses total area, which counts lakes, rivers and other inland water. Coastal waters are not included.
Is the United States bigger than China?
By total area, yes, slightly: about 9.8 million km² against 9.6 million km². Some sources count only land and put China ahead, so this pair never appears in the quiz.
What is my best streak?
It shows on your stats card. Best streaks and the daily streak are saved in this browser only.
Can I play only one continent?
Yes. Pick a region in Practice mode. The daily challenge always uses every country.
