How to play Word Rain
Word Rain is a quick typing game. Words drop from the top of the screen, and your job is to type each one before it reaches the ground. It is a fun way to practice typing speed and spelling at the same time, and a round only takes a few minutes.
The basics
- Press Play. The first words begin to fall right away.
- Type a word you see. As you type, the matching word lights up and the letters you have typed so far are marked. If several words start the same way, the one closest to the ground is the target.
- Press Enter or Space to fire. If your text matches a falling word exactly, it pops and you score. If not, the box shakes and your combo resets.
- Protect the ground. Each word that lands breaks one of the ten ground blocks. When all ten are gone, the game is over.
Scoring and levels
Each word is worth 10 points per letter, so a nine-letter word is worth much more than a three-letter one. Clear words in a row to build a combo: every hit in a streak adds 10 percent to your points, up to triple points. A wrong guess or a missed word ends the streak. Higher levels add a small bonus too.
Every 10 words you clear moves you up a level. Level 1 uses short, everyday words like cat and moon. By level 5 you will see words like pencil and harvest, and later levels bring long words such as telescope and tricky spellings like rhythm, necessary and conscientious. Words also fall faster and appear more often as you climb.
Watch for two special words. A gold word with a star fixes one broken ground block. A blue word with a snowflake slows all the rain for a few seconds, which is a great time to catch up.
Tips to type faster
- Keep your eyes on the words, not your hands. Touch typing, with your fingers resting on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;), is the biggest speed boost over time.
- Go for the lowest word first. It is the closest to breaking a block.
- Use Space to fire. Your thumb is already on it, so you can type the next word without moving your hand to Enter.
- Accuracy beats panic. A wrong guess costs your combo, so slow down a little on long words.
- Read the whole word before you start. Tricky spellings have double letters and silent letters that are easy to miss.
- Try Retro mode for a green screen look with a big, easy-to-read font.

Is Word Rain free?
Yes. It is free to play in any modern browser with no sign-up and no download.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. When you press Start on a phone, the game fills the screen above your keyboard. Type the word and tap Enter or the space bar. A small screen means a shorter fall, but the words take the same time to land.
Why did my word not clear?
The text must match a falling word exactly, letter for letter. If the box turns red, no word on screen starts with what you typed. Press Enter to clear the box and try again.
What counts as accuracy and WPM?
Accuracy compares the letters in the words you cleared with every letter you typed, so typos and backspaces lower it. WPM counts five letters as one word and uses only the time you were playing, not paused.
Where are my scores saved?
Your top 10 scores and best score are saved in this browser on this device. Nothing is uploaded. Clearing your browser data or using a private window will reset them.
Is this good typing practice for school?
Yes. It builds speed and spelling at the same time, and the later levels use words that many people misspell, like necessary, rhythm and conscientious. A few rounds make a good brain break between assignments.
